Goals and Outcomes

Gamer Plushies Craft Program

Goal Two
Understand the essential nature of information and its relevance to society

For the second goal, I have chosen the outcomes 2b, 2c, and 2d and four artifacts to support how I have reached these outcomes in the course of my study at Dominican University.

Outcome 2b
Interpret information policies from local to global levels in relation to their impact on intellectual freedom, access, literacy, and information behavior

For this outcome, two assignments are particularly relevant. In LIS 723 Services for Children and Young Adults with Prof. Nemec-Loise, my reading response to the online book, Little eLit’s Young Children, New Media, and Libraries: A Guide for Incorporating New Media into Library Collections, Services, and Programs for Families and Children Ages 0-5, analyzes technology access policies for children as well as regulations and recommendations for parents in regards to age-appropriateness of technology with children. In my paper, “Assisting Patrons with Autism in Libraries,” for LIS 701 Intro to Library and Information Science with Prof. Crowley, I review multiple resources and policies for working with autistic patrons as well as families and caretakers of individuals on the autism spectrum.

Outcome 2c
Assess community information needs and interests

In LIS 723 Services for Children and Young Adults with Prof. Nemec-Loise, for our assignment on creating a Summer Learning Challenge Proposal, my group chose Lincoln Square as our neighborhood and community and for the proposal we assessed the community’s demographics, local businesses, and unique needs to design our Summer Learning Challenge for children and teens. Since Sulzer Regional Library, our chosen library, is in close proximity to Old Town School of Folk Music and right across the street from the park where a music festival is regularly held, we felt that a music theme would work wonderfully in addition to cultural-themed programs in partnerships with local businesses and community centers.

Outcome 2d
Develop appropriate responses to information needs

In LIS 722 Materials for Young Adults with Prof. Janice del Negro, our group assignment was to create an online resource for a chosen relevant subject. For our project, our group focused on Young Adults and Suicide. Suicide is an unfortunately relevant and important interest for young adults and those who work with young adults. Our website, though simple in design, provides statistics, resources, book recommendations, warning signs, and appropriate numbers and websites to go to for help for those who are or may know someone who is suffering from depression or suicidal thoughts.
